“Please introduce yourself.”
(Hook + Core + Link)
失败案例:“Good morning, Professor. My name is Li Hua, and I graduated from ABC University with a major in Computer Science.”(平淡如水,毫无记忆点)
My journey into artificial intelligence didn't start in a university lab, but from a personal project: I built a simple chatbot to help my grandmother, who has mild cognitive impairment, remember her daily medication schedule. This experience showed me the real-world power of AI to improve lives.”
接上文:“This passion drove me to join a research project on natural language processing, where I was responsible for data preprocessing and model tuning. By implementing a novel data augmentation technique, I helped improve the model's accuracy by 8%. Later, during my internship at Tencent, I worked on a recommendation algorithm that increased user click-through rates by 5% in the A/B test.”
完美收尾:“These experiences solidified my desire to delve deeper into human-computer interaction. I was particularly fascinated by Professor [请填写真实教授姓名]'s research on empathetic AI at NTU. I believe my hands-on project experience and my passion for creating human-centered technology make me a strong fit for your Master of Science in AI program.”
Why NTU? Why this program?
巨坑回答1(无脑吹捧型):“Because NTU is a top university in the world, with a beautiful campus and a great reputation.”(教授心想:我知道我们学校很牛,但这对你意味着什么?)
巨坑回答2(广撒网型):“I am very interested in Singapore's vibrant economy and multicultural environment.”(这个理由你可以用来申请NUS、SMU,任何一所新加坡的学校,毫无特殊性。)
On a macro level, I'm drawn to NTU's global leadership in my field. For instance, I know NTU is ranked 3rd globally in Materials Science according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject. This isn't just a number to me; it represents a concentration of top-tier research talent and cutting-edge facilities, like the Nanyang NanoFabrication Centre. Being in Singapore, a global hub for advanced manufacturing and R&D, also means unparalleled opportunities to connect with industry leaders like Micron and GlobalFoundries, which aligns with my career goal of working in semiconductor R&D.”
满分案例 (申请商业分析专业):“What specifically attracts me to the MSc in Business Analytics program is its balanced curriculum. I've reviewed the course structure and am particularly excited about modules like 'BA6102: Customer Analytics' and 'BA6104: Big Data Management'. Unlike other programs that are purely technical, NTU's program emphasizes applying these skills to solve real-world business problems. The requirement of a capstone project, where we get to work with an industry partner, is exactly the kind of practical experience I'm looking for to bridge the gap between theory and practice.”
满分案例 (申请环境工程专业):“But the most compelling reason for me is the work of Professor [请填写真实教授姓名] in water resource management. I've read his recent paper on membrane technology for desalination, published in 'Water Research', and it deeply resonates with my undergraduate research on wastewater treatment. The prospect of potentially learning from him or even contributing to the research at the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) is the primary motivation behind my application. I believe his mentorship would be invaluable for my goal of becoming a water technology specialist.”
(Acknowledge + Reflect + Prove)
回答示范:“Thank you for pointing that out. I admit that my grade in 'Advanced Calculus' during my sophomore year was not ideal. At that time, I was struggling to balance my coursework with my role as president of the student club and didn't manage my time effectively. It was a tough lesson, but it taught me the importance of prioritization. Since then, I adopted a more structured study plan using tools like Notion, and as you can see, my grades in more advanced, specialized courses in the following semesters, like 'Numerical Analysis' and 'Machine Learning', showed a significant upward trend. I view that experience as a crucial learning curve in my academic journey.”
回答示范:“Yes, I have applied to a few other competitive programs as I want to ensure I have the best opportunity to pursue my graduate studies. However, NTU's program remains my top choice for a very specific reason. As I mentioned earlier, the research focus of Professor [再次提起那位教授] on [他的研究领域] is a perfect match for my academic interests and career aspirations. While other programs are excellent in their own right, none offer this unique alignment. The opportunity to contribute to this specific field at NTU is what excites me the most, and if given the chance, I would be thrilled to accept the offer.”
这个问题千万不能说“No, I don't have any questions.”
- 关于学术:“Could you share more about the opportunities for master's students to get involved in faculty research projects? Is there a formal process like the URECA program for undergraduates, or is it more informal?”
What kind of career support does the program offer to international students? Are there specific networking events or workshops with industry partners in Singapore?”
From your perspective, what is the most challenging aspect of this program for students, and what are the characteristics of students who typically succeed and thrive in this environment?”
